Woodland Creation Grant

On 2nd January 2018 to 16th February 2018 the application window is open for the Woodland Creation Grant. The Woodland Creation Grant is a capital grant where applicants can claim for a one off payment for the trees which are to be planted and also any associated protection items. From 2018 applicants can receive support towards the infrastructure to help establish the new woodland using capital item FY2: Woodland Infrastructure.

If successful, applicants have 2 years to purchase and plant/ install these capital items, with a further 3 months to submit their claim. Once the woodland is planted and the final capital claim is paid, eligible applicants can apply for multi- year support to maintain the newly created woodland for 10 years.

Therefore the Woodland Creation Support in Countryside Stewardship is made up of:

  1. Woodland Creation Grant for the Capital Items associated with the planting and protection of trees.
  2. Woodland Creation Maintenance Grant for the ongoing maintenance of trees after they have been planted.

When developing an application for the Woodland Creation Grant applicants can chose from a range of items, with each item having a different payment rate which is the value of a one-off payment that will be paid towards the cost of that item or activity. It must be noted that TE4 (Tree Planting) is mandatory and must be included in all applications.

Agreement Holders must maintain their newly planted woodland for an additional 5 years following the completion of the capital works this is regardless of whether or not they apply for WD1. To support successful establishment and on-going maintenance of new- woodland, the CS Higher –Tier Option Woodland Creation Maintenance Payments offers a multi- annual payment of £200 per hectare for a period of 10 years.
