Addisons Chartered Surveyors hosted a race night at The Saddle Room near Leyburn last year to raise money to purchase a specially adapted bike for the pupils at Mowbray School.  The race night was a huge success and exceeded all expectations raising £2,252; enough for four new bikes!  Members of staff from Addisons were invited to the school on Friday to see the new bikes in action.

Mowbray School near Bedale caters for children aged 3 to 16, who have a range of special educational needs.  The adapted bikes, which many of the children require to be able to cycle, are very expensive to purchase.  Last year Betty’s Tearooms kindly donated a bike to the school and when Addisons heard about it they were keen to help buy a second.  Richard Duffus, head of property and partner at Addisons said, “one bike is wonderful but we couldn’t help thinking how much more fun the children could have with two!”

Richard’s daughter had attended the school before going on to study at sixth form college, he said, “I have seen first-hand how Mowbray’s excellent staff and facilities help their pupils to flourish, I knew Addisons could help give something back and this is how the idea of a race night fundraiser came about.”

Staff from Addisons’ Barnard Castle and Richmond offices arranged the equestrian themed event which saw over 60 guests enjoy the thrill of a race evening as well as a three course meal in the renowned Saddle Room restaurant.  Richard said, “It was a fantastic evening, we were overwhelmed by people’s generosity and we are thrilled to have raised sufficient funds for these four bikes.”

The new bikes have a range of adaptations meaning that more of the children can take part in cycling.  With its own 5.5 acre farm on school grounds and a purpose built sports hall there is plenty of room for the pupils to enjoy them.  Now with a total of 5 disability bikes the school has been able to launch a bike club which not only provides a fun after-school activity but also educates pupils on road safety.  Headteacher, Jonnathan Tearle said, “We have been delighted with the donation from Addisons and that we have been able to buy four specialist bikes, it has been very uplifting to see such a number of pupils to cycle together with their friends and see such enjoyment. I would like to thank Richard Duffus and Addisons for all their efforts and for raising such a large sum of money, which has meant that all our pupils have access to bicycles.”

Even though it was raining on Friday, it didn’t dampen the pupils’ enthusiasm as they used the school hall to demonstrate the new bikes.  Richard said, “It has been great to see how our fund raising efforts have paid off and to see the children enjoying themselves on the bikes is just brilliant.”
